Years ago they told me that the true measure of a man could be determined by how gracefully he endured mental and physical pain. A well known neurosurgeon once said that those who were spinal cord injured were like fine pieces of china. We who were successfully rehabbed and accepted our “new lives” as disabled persons would find inner strength and wisdom: A unique appreciation of things that others might not ever realize. In the years since my spinal cord injury, I have realized that a man’s true worth can be measured not only by how he deals with his own suffering, but also by what he has learned to hold in his heart and share with others.

Those who see me now do not see what it took to make me what I am today. They don’t see the severity of my paralysis and how dependent it makes me on others. They may not realize that I too could once walk and still remember how warm beach sand felt beneath my feet. I can still remember the exhilaration of an early morning’s run in Middletown. I was free then; there was no pain. However, had it not been for the diving accident that took so much away from me, I may not have gotten so much back. Although pain will always be a part of my life, I have learned from it.

It has taught me to appreciate simplicity and inner strength. My injury made me look inside myself and become a man. My true worth became my ten-year story.

This book is the story of many disabled people, men and women who have quietly reached their own levels of courage. They inspire others simply by living their own lives and contradicting the stereotypes into which others try to fit them. They have taught me patience and given me the ability to overcome my own physical limitations.

I would like to dedicate this book, my success and inner strength to my mother. She has never dominated or overpowered me. When we decided to write our ten-year story, it was a tribute to the love that existed between us and our love for others. Ours is a story of friendship, what one true friend will do for another when life seems over. It has been a friendship neither of us was prepared for, but the intensity and dedication of which has made my life whole.
